Unidos Wins Permaculture Magazine Award

Paulinho Muzaliwa receiving Permaculture Award

Lush Spring Prize Recognition

Unidos Social Innovation Centre, an NGO founded by refugees in Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda, has earned recognition through the Lush Spring Prize award for its permaculture and regenerative agriculture initiatives.

Paulinho Muzaliwa established and leads the organization since 2018, alongside refugee community members working to combat food insecurity and generate sustainable livelihoods after food rations were significantly reduced for refugees in Uganda.

Our Programs

The organization operates through inclusive education and community empowerment programs. Courses cover:

  • Ecological farming techniques
  • English language instruction
  • Business and leadership development
  • Female empowerment initiatives

To date, Unidos has supported approximately 1,000 graduates from Somalia, Congo, and Burundi who completed training in ecological farming practices.

Soil Regeneration

The organization emphasizes soil regeneration through educational programs and practical demonstrations of vermicomposting techniques. Leadership has identified commercial-scale worm composting as a viable expansion opportunity and has already established one system near the education center.

Impact

Through permaculture and regenerative agriculture instruction, Unidos enables refugees to cultivate crops sustainably while generating improved income opportunities. The organization remains dedicated to environmental stewardship and community-driven development within the settlement.

Recognition

The award announcement included praise for "outstanding work and commitment to making a difference" and recognized the significance of sustainable practices and community-led solutions in addressing humanitarian challenges.
