Our Programs

Comprehensive initiatives creating sustainable livelihoods and restoring hope.

Regenerative Agriculture

Regenerative agriculture is a holistic approach where we involve all the elements to reach the optimum impact, which means activating the farmers while teaching them how to regenerate the soil.

For decades, people have been using chemical fertilizers, harming the soil and people's health. We believe that with worm compost, we can regenerate soils, improving water conservation, remineralization, soil structure, and microlife, while inspiring optimism and hope.

We are shifting from dependency on organizations like the World Food Program by taking care of the soil through worm compost application and planting trees to mitigate micro-climate changes.

Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting has emerged as a powerful tool for nurturing soil, community, and sustainability. Our program teaches refugees to create their own worm composting systems.

We design human systems that co-evolve with their natural environment, generating mutual benefits for both farming communities and ecosystems.

  • Improved water conservation
  • Soil remineralization
  • Better soil structure
  • Enhanced microlife activity
  • 2 tons of food waste recycled weekly

Women's Empowerment

We have trained nearly 700 women with entrepreneurial skills and are helping them play active roles in greening the settlement by planting moringa and other fruit trees while building small businesses.

Women use moringa tree leaves to make organic and liquid soaps, enabling them to generate sustainable incomes. In combination with teaching soap making, we also offer business training and networking opportunities.

Programs Include:

  • Organic soap making
  • Mushroom cultivation
  • Moringa tree planting
  • Business skills training
  • Networking opportunities

Mushroom Cultivation

In partnership with Re-Alliance and Mycorama, Unidos has trained groups of refugee women to grow oyster mushrooms using sustainable methods.

Our first cohort of 15 women - the "Eagles Power" group led by Furaha Bahati - recently harvested their first batch of mushrooms, creating both food security and income for their families.

Program Goals:

  • Empower 150 women as mushroom farmers
  • Establish Nakivale's first Mushroom Spawn Multiplication Hub
  • Combat malnutrition with protein-rich food
  • Create value-added products (dried mushrooms, samosas)

Mushrooms are highly nutritious, quick-growing, and can be cultivated in small spaces - perfect for refugee settlements.
